Roberti Ranch

$200,000 USDA Rural Energy for America Grant (REAP)
$1.4 million USDA (REAP) Loan Guarantee
Agricultural Grant

Roberti Ranch is a 6,000-acre family owned and operated ranch, operating since 1923. Producing beef cattle and forage hay, the ranch incurred substantial utility bills each year in running their irrigation pumps.

The ranch wanted to install a 500-kilowatt electrical solar system in order to offset costs associated with running their irrigation pumps by applying for an energy grant. Morrison & Company was engaged to conduct a feasibility study, and if found feasible, prepare a Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) grant application on their behalf.

The Rural Energy for America Program offers grants and loan guarantees for the purchase and installation of renewable energy systems and for energy efficiency improvements for small businesses, farmers, and ranchers located in rural areas. The grants will pay up to 25% of eligible costs (including equipment and installation) for energy.

The project was found to be feasible; with fierce competition that year, the ranch was successful in securing more than $200,000 in grant funding and a $1.4 million loan guarantee to support the construction of the solar system. Roberti Ranch received the largest grant in the state of California and the largest loan guarantee in the United States for that grant year.
